Choosing the Right Size Wall Art for Your Space
Choosing the perfect wall art size can feel a little overwhelming, especially when you’re decorating a nursery, a cosy reading nook, or a beautiful corner of your home. The good news is that a few simple guidelines can make the whole process feel effortless. Hopefully this guide will be your friendly roadmap to choosing artwork that feels “just right”.
Start with the wall, not the art
Falling in love with a print is the easy part, but we should take a moment to look at the wall itself.
A helpful rule of thumb - Your artwork should fill around 50–75% of the available wall space. This keeps the room feeling balanced rather than empty or crowded.
Example: If your wall is 120 cm wide, aim for art between 60–90 cm wide. This could be one large print or a set of two or three smaller ones.
Consider the furniture below It
If your art will hang above a sofa, bed, sideboard, or cot, use this simple proportion trick:
Choose artwork that’s roughly 2/3 the width of the furniture. This creates harmony and avoids the “floating postage stamp” effect.
-
Above a 180 cm sofa → around 120 cm of artwork
-
Above a 150 cm bed → around 100 cm of artwork
You can achieve this with one large print or a curated set.
Think in sets, not just singles
Sometimes a single large print feels too bold — or not bold enough. Gallery sets are a beautiful alternative.
A few popular combinations:
-
Two prints (e.g., 30×40 cm each) side by side
-
Three prints (e.g., 21×30 cm) in a row
-
A grid of four square prints for a playful, modern look
Sets are especially lovely for nurseries and children’s rooms, where storytelling and variety feel magical.

Hang at the right height
Even the perfect print can look “off” if it’s hung too high. Hang artwork so the centre sits at eye level — around 145–150 cm from the floor.
If it’s above furniture, leave 15–20 cm of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork. This keeps everything feeling intentional and grounded. Use Painter’s Tape to visualise the size and step back and see how it feels.
